Urology team first in NHS to use latest robot for prostate cancer surgery
We were really proud to work in partnership with the Sunshine Group - a dedicated support network for breast cancer patients at Aintree University Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital as they teamed up with Ford UK to unveil a ground breaking SupportBelt with comfort and care in mind.
The soft, foam-enhanced seatbelt accessory is transforming the driving experience for those recovering from mastectomies or breast tissue removal. Thoughtfully engineered to reduce pressure and pain, the SupportBelt’s concave design moulds gently to the body, helping to prevent chafing and irritation. It's easily attachable to either the driver or passenger side.
The innovation was launched in May by the group, who are also proud recipients of the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service. Among the first to trial the SupportBelt was group leader Ann Coffey.
“It was such a privilege that our group was chosen to spearhead the testing phase of this wonderful innovation,” said Ann. “A mastectomy is a major operation, and adapting to your new body can take time. The SupportBelt offers not just physical relief, but emotional reassurance—helping patients regain their independence and confidence behind the wheel.”
The SupportBelt is being distributed in partnership with other leading breast cancer support charities including Flat Friends, Keeping Abreast, and of course, the Sunshine Group.
Members of the group were joined by Liverpool Lord Mayor Councillor Barbara Murray, who made the event at the Novotel in Paddington village her first official event, along with other group members and representatives from the University Hospitals of Liverpool and the charity.
